The sales revenue of automation products in municipal water treatment industry in 2009 reached 920 million RMB, a double-digit increase compared with the same period in 2008 thanks to the huge national policy-oriented investment in the construction of municipal water treatment facilities in the "11th five-year plan".

The application of automation brands focuses on foreign ones:

Control systems: the water control systems in water supply and water treatment industry are relatively simple generally, with PLC as the mainstream control system enjoying a comparatively concentrated market. Siemens held 40% of the PLC market in the water industry with the advantage of high performance to price ratio.

SCADA: the main role of SCADA in water supply is to collect and transmit the real-time production data collected by a variety of sensors in the remote display pipeline and plant region and then control and manage the equipment. Sewage treatment process can be used for multiple control points, including the level of PH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, frequency, pump running, as well as monitoring equipment (valves, pumps, and motors, etc.). The survey showed the brands more used are Wonderware, Rockwell, Siemens, and Fame View.

Inverters: middle- and low-voltage inverters are mainly used in the water industry which requires simple functions of inverters, favorable operating conditions and low access threshold, thus the brands of inverters are relatively disperse. The survey shows that foreign brands including ABB, Rockwell, Schneider, Siemens, Fuji and Delta, etc. are more popular and Chinese local brands also hold some share, especially in the application of small inverters, inverter products of almost all brands can be found.
