Natural disasters cause huge amounts of devastation to countries and their communities. By the use of internet of things technology (IoT) new lines of defense can help reduce the damage these natural disasters cause and monitor the environmental situation.
Components of the IoT include a sensor network, reliable data delivery and intelligent processing. This system can be used to monitor environmental disasters such as urban floods, river floods, landslides, bridges, earthquakes and lake and coral reef observations to wirelessly provide warnings.
The old technology was only initiated after a disaster had occurred, whereas the new technology will warn residents before the calamity occurs, allowing plenty of time for evacuation and preventative measures to be put in place.
From the single-ended monitoring systems of the past to the integration of multi-monitoring and central control systems in the future, environment monitoring has evolved from “monitoring without control” into smart and integrated systems.
